GroupMe Etiquette

GroupMe Etiquette

Grade Level Class Representatives might choose to use a group chat platform for class parent communication. While an app like GroupMe can be very helpful, its misuse can cause frustration among other parents and sometimes cause harm.

The forum should ONLY be used to inform parents of upcoming school events, send class reminders, or ask questions that benefit the entire group.

SAA asks that you use the following etiquette when communicating with parents from your son’s class on a group chat format.

  • Refrain from accusatory language toward an individual or group of individuals.
  • Refrain from making negative comments about teachers, staff, students, or other parents.
  • Avoid threadjacking (taking over a discussion thread unrelated to the original posting).
  • Avoid complaining.
  • Send only school-related messages that apply to the whole group. Individual messages should be sent in a private message.
  • If a person has adequately answered a question, an answer from another is unnecessary.
  • Keep in mind that this forum is unlike that of a group text with family and friends. It is simply used to inform.

If you are in doubt as to whether it is appropriate to post to a group forum, start by contacting your class representative directly.
