Middle School Key Experiences
Overnight Retreats
Retreats provide an opportunity for boys to gain confidence and for the class to build the team and foster an esprit de corps while learning new leadership skills. The retreats for 6th – 8th grades are held overnight typically at a Hill Country ranch or state park.
Leadership Positions
Starting in the 7th grade and into the 8th grade, boys will be considered for select leadership positions. These include Commanders, Executive Officers, Platoon Leaders, Battalion Staff, First Sergeants, and Platoon Sergeants.
Battalion Council
Key 7th and 8th graders are members of the Battalion Council. Functioning much like a student council, the Battalion Council works together to provide a means for student expression and assistance in school affairs and activities. It provides experience in leadership and encourage student, faculty, and community interaction.
8th Grade Year
In their final year as an Academy Cadet and as the oldest students on campus, each SAA boy grows more in the 8th grade as a person than any other year at The Academy. The school year is packed with experiences the boys treasure and often reminisce over when they return as alumni. This includes hosting a Fall Fair booth and the Cowboy Breakfast, putting on the Shakespeare Play, attending their last Military Ball, connecting with alumni through the Alumni & 8th Grade Basketball Game and the Alumni & 8th Grade Luncheon, arranging for a class gift to the school, opening their time capsule from 1st grade, and walking through the Bondurant Gate at Commencement.
Competitive Sports
The San Antonio Academy athletics program gives Middle School students the opportunity to participate in positive, school-sponsored athletic team. The student body takes advantage of this opportunity with more than 94% involvement. With football, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track, baseball, and golf, students can play and gain skills in a variety of sports.
