Walt Buzzini V - Class of 2013 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

It was an honor to welcome back SAA alumnus Walt Buzzini V, class of 2013, as our Alumni Monday speaker on August 19, 2024. In a heartfelt speech, he reflected on his deep connections to The Academy, which span three generations, along with many fond memories to look back on.

Alumni Monday-Walt Buzzini V

Walt is an "Academy lifer," which is a term referring to those who spend all ten years at The Academy, from Pre-kindergarten to 8th grade. Not only is he a lifer, but he is also a legacy, as his family has been attending SAA for three generations. His grandfather, "Schot," class of 1945; his father, Jay Buzzini, class of 1977; his uncle, Byron, class of 1982; and his younger brother, Courtlandt, class of 2016. After graduating from The Academy, he attended The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he was very involved in campus life. After high school, he attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a degree in environmental science with a minor in public policy. Walt now works as a campus missioner for the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

In his speech, Walt shared many memories from his time at SAA, highlighting cherished traditions like the Cowboy Breakfast and being part of the Alamo Honor Guard during the Battle of Flowers parade. He recounted the significance of brotherhood, recalling his bond with his primary buddy and emphasizing the lifelong friendships formed at The Academy. He also shared his struggles and eventual success on the football field, attributing his perseverance to the support of Coach Mike Heineman, reminding the boys that failure is part of life and encouraging them to embrace the support of their teachers, staff, and coaches.

Walt concluded by urging the boys to look out for one another as they navigate their own journeys. He closed by expressing gratitude for The Academy's enduring values, which continue to shape his life and work.
