It was a pleasure to welcome back SAA alumnus OJ Neeley MD, class of 2001, as our Alumni Monday speaker on May 13, 2024. Returning to his alma mater after years away evoked many memories as he shared a heartfelt reflection on his journey since being an Academy cadet.

After graduating from SAA in 2001, OJ attended Saint Mary's Hall for high school. He then graduated from The University of Texas at Austin for his undergraduate degree. He went on to medical school in Dallas at UT Southwestern, culminating in a career as a neurosurgeon. 

OJ spoke about his gratitude and appreciation toward his teachers such as Mr. Barry Bradley and Coach Mike Heineman, who played key roles in shaping his path. He also reflected on The Academy's motto, highlighting the enduring impact of fundamental values like honesty, kindness, and striving for excellence.

His recollections of Academy life painted a vivid picture of established camaraderie and life lessons, from patiently waiting for gummy worms to the importance of "following through." He also recalled other unique SAA routines like inspections, which at the time did not seem useful to him, but now he can recognize the importance of preparation and personal improvement. OJ emphasized the significance of family, principles, personal fulfillment, and community, pillars instilled during his Academy days.

OJ continued as he shared some of his favorite memories, from basketball games to famous Academy traditions. He encouraged the boys to cherish each moment and embrace challenges with confidence and determination.

He concluded his presentation by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect and offered a helping hand to current students and fellow Academy alumni.
