As part of San Antonio Academy’s Alumni Monday speaker series, we hosted current parent and alumnus, Mitchell Penner '99, during chapel this morning. He shared his insights and reflections highlighting his gratitude for the SAA community.

Delving into his journey, he traced his family's Academy roots back to his father and uncle, the late Michael "Mickey" and Mark Penner '60, respectively. Continuing the Penner legacy is Mitchell's son, Mickey '30. From early school years to sporting endeavors, Mitchell painted a vivid picture of his formative experiences, filled with brotherhood and life lessons.

He also expressed his gratitude for the invaluable role of educators, paying tribute to influential teachers such as Mr. Barry Bradley, Mr. Brendan Moore, and Coach Mike Heineman, who instilled values of working hard, open-mindedness, and intellectual curiosity. 

Reflecting on Academy traditions, he highlighted the enduring spirit of camaraderie and shared experiences, from school dances to cherished class trips. These special memories, he emphasized, form the bedrock of life-long friendships and support networks.

As he ventured into life after graduating from The Academy, he earned his degree at the University of Arizona. He recounted his collegiate and professional journey, marked by perseverance and dedication. From cold-calling in the business world to continuing a family legacy in retail along with his brother Max '03 and their uncle Mark '60, he emphasized the importance of teamwork and resilience, which he credits learning while attending SAA.

He concluded by encouraging the boys to embrace the words of the school motto, emphasizing the importance of treating others with respect and seizing opportunities to make a difference.

In a final note of gratitude, especially after losing his father in 2002, he thanked The Academy community for their unwavering support and encouragement and reminded the boys to cherish their time at SAA and to pursue their passions.
