John Browning, MD – Class of 1989 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

In a captivating Alumni Monday presentation on January 29, we had the privilege of hosting John Browning, MD, current Academy parent and member of the Class of 1989. His journey from an "average" Academy student to a successful dermatologist in San Antonio was both inspiring and filled with fond memories.

Dr. Browning's reflections took us back to his Middle School days at SAA, where he started as a 6th grader during John Webster's second year as head of school. The camaraderie with classmates and the spirited growth of the school marked the beginning of a memorable chapter in Dr. Browning's learning career.

Fondly recalling teachers like Mr. Webster, Colonel Bondurant, Ms. Cummins, and Prof. Bradley, he shared photos and humorous anecdotes from his classes. Notably, he highlighted an art project he painted featuring Mr. Webster in Egypt, a piece he later found out that remained on Mr. Webster's wall for over 30 years!

A unique aspect of Dr. Browning's Academy connection is his family's multi-generational ties. His father, brother, uncle, sons, nephews, and godsons all graduated from or currently attend The Academy, showcasing the enduring impact of the institution on his family.

Dr. Browning's educational journey extended beyond SAA to Alamo Heights High School and Vanderbilt University, ultimately leading to a fulfilling career as a dermatologist. He emphasized the value of lessons learned at The Academy, from the discipline instilled during drill sessions to the importance of surrounding oneself with motivated individuals.

"Looking back, I'm very thankful for that [drill and the Military Program] because when you learn to march, you have to pay attention, you have to follow the person in front of you, you don't want to get out of step. If you don't do well with your uniform inspection, then it reflects poorly on your company. So, I learned the value of doing my part to stay in line, to learn from others around me, and also to contribute."

In a heartfelt letter to his younger self as an Academy Boy, Dr. Browning congratulated himself for being at "the best school ever" and encouraged embracing opportunities, learning from teachers, and treating others with respect and kindness.

In closing, he shared a powerful quote from C.S. Lewis, reminding us all that while we can't change the beginning, we can start where we are and shape our future.
