Joe Rubin – Class of 1973 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

On Monday, November 27, we had the privilege of welcoming back Joe Rubin, Class of 1973, as our Alumni Monday speaker. Joe's connection to San Antonio Academy runs deep, with a family legacy spanning three generations—his father, Jay Rubin ‘41, and his son, Griffin Rubin ‘09.

In his inspiring speech, Joe shared insights into his remarkable journey from The Academy to becoming a successful tax lawyer, serving notable clients, including pro football players and a diverse array of professionals. He highlighted the enduring lessons he learned during his time at The Academy, which continue to shape his career and life.

Joe emphasized the importance of honesty, kindness, and striving to be the best. Trust, he stressed, is built on a foundation of integrity, essential in establishing lasting professional relationships. "When you have a reputation for being honest and telling the truth, people are more likely to trust you because they feel safe with you and can rely on you," he shared.

He further highlighted the significance of being the best one can be, attributing his success in part to the public speaking skills honed during his time at The Academy. "By being comfortable as a public speaker, you will have a huge advantage – in school and in the workplace – over most people," he advised.

Drawing on his experiences in leadership at The Academy, Joe shared two lessons from Colonel Bondurant, Jr. '39 (SAA Headmaster 1960-1985): (1) the importance of independent thinking, and (2) the resilience to learn from mistakes.

"Remember, the only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing. Learning from mistakes helps all of us be the best we can be” said Joe.

Joe Rubin Presentation

To conclude his visit, Joe unveiled the history behind an Academy trophy dating back 125 years. His parents, Iris and Jay Rubin, found it in an antique store in 1971 and brought it to Col. Bondurant, Jr., who decided to make it an annual award for the SAA cadet who has good grades and who shows ethics, leadership, and concern for others. He named the award in memory of both his father, Col. Bondurant, Sr., and Jay’s father (Joe's grandfather), a distinguished citizen of San Antonio: Joseph Rubin Trophy/Colonel's Cup.

“It is such a great honor for my family to be affiliated with the Bondurant family who built this great school and gave so much of their lives to the boys who attended The Academy.”

About Alumni Mondays: Each Monday, we welcome an Academy alumnus to speak to SAA boys during chapel. During this presentation, our alumni speakers share meaningful stories and lessons from their days at SAA.
