It was a pleasure to welcome Billy Conn, class of 2016, alumnus and former battalion commander, as our speaker for Alumni Monday on October 21, 2024. Billy delivered an inspirational speech centered on the theme, “Who is the man I want to be?” Reflecting on his journey since his time at SAA, he emphasized the importance of personal growth, responsibility, and the value of making intentional decisions.

Billy credited several influential figures from his school years, such as former head of school Mr. John Webster and Coach Bobby Zander '72, with shaping his early development. He also shared memories of his classmates and their journey from uncertainty to unity and achievement. Using stories from his own life, including his experience transitioning from a college student to a professional in the family’s construction business, founded by his late father, Larry Conn '81, he illustrated how pivotal learning moments have shaped his character.

During his speech, Billy shared numerous vital lessons, including the importance of constantly learning and teaching others as a method of reinforcing knowledge. He highlighted his father’s wisdom, focusing on the power of establishing and living out values—what he calls "bumper stickers"—that guide one’s actions and decisions. He encouraged the boys to identify their own principles that resonate deeply and shape their future.

Concluding his speech, Billy also encouraged the current 8th grade class to rise to their new responsibilities, emphasizing that each decision they make now will determine the person they become. His message, rooted in personal experience and growth, instills in the boys the desire to forge their own paths with intention and integrity.
