Jamey Steen, Class of 2003
2024 San Antonio Academy Alumni Association Young Alumnus Award
The San Antonio Academy Alumni Association is pleased to recognize, honor, and celebrate Mr. Jamey Steen ’03 with the 2024 Young Alumnus Award. Established in 2022, the Young Alumnus Award highlights extraordinary alumni aged 35 and younger who are rising stars. Recipients exemplify the core principles of San Antonio Academy alumni: scholarship, leadership, integrity, and brotherhood.
Mr. Steen has an extensive list of personal and professional accomplishments. Born and reared in San Antonio, Mr. Steen began his Academy experience as a pre-kindergartener and graduated in 2003 as an Academy “lifer.” His introduction to SAA continued a rich family legacy, following in the footsteps of two role models, his father, John T. Steen, Jr. ’63, and his brother, John T. Steen III ’95. In addition, his uncles, Martin W. Clement II ’63 and James H. Clement, Jr. ’68, many cousins, and extended family members are Academy alumni or current students.
Following his high school graduation from Saint Mary’s Hall in 2007, Mr. Steen received his bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia in 2011. Since that time, he has called Houston his home. He and his wife, Natalie, met at UVA and married in 2016. They are proud parents of three children: Whit (5), George (2), and Nell (1).
Professionally, Mr. Steen serves as a partner at Buckhorn Resources, a mineral and royalty investment fund. Previously, he spent seven years working in the business development group of Black Stone Minerals Company, L.P. (NYSE:BSM), where he was primarily responsible for new acquisitions. Prior to Black Stone, he was an investment banking analyst with GulfStar Group.
Always focused on improving his community, Mr. Steen achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was further honored with the prestigious Outstanding Eagle Scout Award by the National Eagle Scout Association in 2022. He is also a member of UVA’s Houston Regional Board, which supports the College of Arts & Sciences. In addition to serving as treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield Association, Mr. Steen is involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. By gubernatorial appointment, he sits on the five-member Texas Lottery Commission, which oversees all lottery and bingo activities to promote and ensure integrity, security, honesty, and fairness. He and his family are members of The Church of St. John the Divine.
Mr. Steen remains true to SAA values. He is a former Alumni Council board member and has assisted The Academy with building alumni participation through the Class Agent program. Furthermore, he has advised the school leadership on alumni engagement and has been a strong ambassador for strategic investment among graduates. During his years as an Academy student, he recalls serving as the Battalion Public Affairs Officer and learning the true value of being positive. Mr. Steen is a stellar example of one going beyond expectation with each opportunity and, ultimately, making the world a better place one day at a time.
Mr. Steen is San Antonio Academy’s second Young Alumnus Award recipient. In May 2023, Mr. Matthew Myers ’03 received the inaugural award.
