Sidney Joseph Francis II (SAA Class of 1947)

Sidney Joseph Francis II, age 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2024 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on August 12, 1932 in San Antonio, Texas, to parents, Mattie Bookman Craig Francis and David Gregg Francis, and moved to Luling, Texas in 1936. Sidney attended school in Luling and The San Antonio Academy. He later attended Sewanee: The University of the South where his great, great grandfather, Reverend Alexander Gregg established the university and became Chancellor. Reverend Gregg was later consecrated the first Episcopal Bishop of Texas. Sidney was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He later matriculated to the University of Texas in Austin.

Mr. Francis enlisted in the Army and served his time in Germany. Upon returning home, he lived in both Luling and San Antonio. While in Luling, Mr. Francis began his 35-year banking career with Citizens State Bank of Luling, which was founded by his grandfather, Dr. Sidney J. Francis in 1913. He later served as its President and then Chairman of the Board until his retirement. In the 1960’s, Sidney restored his family’s 1849 farmhouse on their cotton plantation, Dublin Plantation in Kingsbury, Texas. It’s listed in the Historic American Buildings Survey and the National Registry of Historic Places.

Sidney was a member of the German Club, Order of the Alamo, and Texas Cavaliers, Sons of the Republic of Texas and Sons of the American Revolution. Sidney was also a member of the San Antonio Country Club, The Argyle, and Club Giraud.

Mr. Francis is predeceased by his parents; and two sisters, Lillian Francis Morrow and Martha Anne Francis Burrows. Sidney is survived by his wife, Janet Wheat Francis; nieces, Martha Anne Morrow Hanley, Harriett Morrow Curry, Louise Brown Conway; nephew, David Hurst Brown; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
