December 27, 1947 – January 25, 2024

Edward Richard Frnka II, 76, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on January 25, 2024. Ed R, as he was affectionately known, was born on December 27, 1947, in New Orleans, LA, to Martha Hubbert and Henry Frnka. At the age of 4 he moved with his family to San Antonio, Texas. Ed R was a graduating member of the San Antonio Academy class of 1962, Alamo Heights High School class of 1966, University of Texas class of 1970, and St. Mary’s Law School class of 1994.

He spent many summers in the Hill Country at Camp Stewart where he made lifelong friends. Ed R ran track for Alamo Heights and later for the University of Texas, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was passionate about football and after their father’s death, he and his brother ran his coaching school, the Henry E. Frnka Football Clinic, from 1981 to 1995.

Ed R began his career as a landman, but returned to school and earned his law degree to practice oil and gas law. He always loved working in small town courthouses and made many friends along the way.

Ed R was an active part of the San Antonio community. He was a devoted member of the Order of the Alamo, where he served as President, the Texas Cavaliers, the San Antonio German Club, and the Argyle. Ed R was also a proud member and past president of the Quarterback Club. His strong faith led him to be an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an usher for more than 40 years.

Ed R remained close with friends he made 70 years ago beginning at the Elliot School when his family arrived in San Antonio. He made many friends throughout his years and found great joy keeping up with and reconnecting with people from the different facets in his life. Ed R never knew a stranger and was at his best at social gatherings talking with friends new and old. He was beloved for his unique trivia and wit. Ed R was always the first to offer help to anyone in need. He was a devoted father and grandfather attending school plays and music events, camp closings, basketball games, football games, and countless innings at the ball park.

Ed R is survived by his daughter, Virginia Frnka Powell, and son, Edward Richard Frnka III, grandsons, Reed Powell and Alfred Powell, brother, Del Saxon Frnka, niece Stephanie Frnka Threlkeld and nephew, Christopher Saxon Frnka.
