Chili Champions: “All Fired Up” Boys Take Home Three Cook-Off Awards
Posted February 5, 2024
Students in San Antonio Academy’s “All Fired Up” outdoor cooking elective made their mark on the inaugural chili cook-off hosted by The Pigpen Neighborhood Bar on Saturday, February 3. The event proved to be a spicy success for the team of 5th and 6th grade boys, who took home three competition trophies at the end of the day.
Throughout the day, the boys rotated in shifts to man their station with elective teacher, Gary Marvin '89, SAA alumnus and Director of Admissions, nearby to provide guidance. With dedication and teamwork, they prepared food on site and continued to cook, serve samples to patrons, and refill four different varieties of chili.
Competitors could enter their chili into four judged categories: vegetarian, red chili, white chili, or freestyle. Additionally, the event, which was open to the public, provided an opportunity for attendees to savor a diverse array of chili offerings while casting their votes for “fan favorite.”
The "All Fired Up" boys proudly claimed three awards: Fan Favorite, Vegetarian, and Freestyle, thanks to their Predator and Prey Chili featuring spicy and tangy gemsbok and bear meat. Equally significant, they honed their culinary talents, developed time management skills, networked while distributing samples, and fostered brotherhood among teammates.
