Zack Moorman - Class of 2003 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

On January 13, 2025, San Antonio Academy alumnus Zack Moorman, class of 2003, returned to campus to share heartfelt memories and reflections, emphasizing the unique impact of his time at The Academy.

Zack Moorman Alumni Monday

Zack is the second generation to attend SAA, as his father, Thomas '60, is also an Academy graduate. He attended from 6th to 8th grade and spoke about the meaningful traditions, rigorous academics, and lasting friendships that continue to shape his life. In his speech, he humorously recalled moments from his time as a student, including performing in the 8th-grade Romeo and Juliet play and launching wadded paper balls with trebuchets in Mrs. Lee DeWitt's science class. He also reminisced about legendary faculty members like Mr. James Berdecio, whose unwavering commitment to wearing shorts in any weather became a lasting memory.

Zack highlighted the school’s emphasis on imparting responsibility and leadership, from military inspections to serving younger classmates at family-style lunches. "While you're a student here, you know that it's different," he said. "But it wasn’t until my own sons started here that I truly realized how special—and precious—this place is."

Now a father of two current Academy students, Barrow and Wilder '33, Zack marveled at the school’s continued commitment to fostering brotherhood and character. He recounted a touching story of his son, Barrow, receiving support from SAA classmates and teachers during a difficult recovery, calling it a testament to The Academy’s unique sense of community.

Encouraging the boys to cherish their time at SAA, Zack urged them to embrace the values instilled by the school. "Surround yourself with people like your classmates here," he said. "This place turns out honest, kind, and overall better people."

His speech was both a nostalgic trip down memory lane and an inspiring reminder of the lifelong impact of an SAA education, reminding students to take pride in their Academy heritage and to uphold its enduring legacy of excellence and camaraderie.
