William Negley - Class of 1998 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

On May 19, San Antonio Academy welcomed back alumnus William Negley, Class of 1998, as the final Alumni Monday speaker of the 2024–2025 school year. In a heartfelt address to students, faculty, and families, William reflected on the meaning of service, the importance of Memorial Day, and the responsibility each person has to contribute to something greater than themselves.

William used the occasion to shift the focus to the significance of the upcoming Memorial Day. While widely seen as the unofficial start of summer, he reminded the SAA community that the day holds deeper meaning—a time to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to the nation.

Drawing from personal experience, he shared how a question posed to him as a seventh grader at SAA about the validity of the military draft sparked a journey of reflection and ultimately, action. He recounted watching the events of 9/11 as a high school student and how that moment shaped his decision to join the CIA just eight years later. His career continues to be defined by supporting veterans and those struggling to return home from war.

Though his path led to national defense, William emphasized that service takes many forms. “For the teachers in the room, it is no doubt raising the next generation of our community's leaders,” he said. “For the boys in the room, you must find your own path to service.”

As he congratulated the graduating 8th grade Class of 2025, William challenged them to pursue a life of purpose and always seek ways to serve something greater than themselves.
