SAA Names Josh Carrillo and Nicholas Pavelka as 2025 Geography Bee Champs

Posted January 16, 2025

The 2025 San Antonio Academy Geography Bee debuted a new format, exciting students, faculty, and parents with a Jeopardy-style competition. Spanning two chapel sessions on January 15 and 16, the event showcased the exceptional geographical knowledge of The Academy’s 4th–8th graders.

To qualify, students faced a challenging process that began with a qualifying exam boasting an impressive 86% school-wide passing rate. Top scorers then advanced to individual exams with Middle School Social Studies Teacher Christopher McDow. Preparation for the Bee included studying over both Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks and after-school rapid-fire questioning drills.

Its new buzz-in format challenged participants to respond to clues about global geography. Questions ranged from naming natural formations to famous landmarks, national parks, and regions, testing not only the boys’ overall knowledge but also their quick-thinking skills.

Separate rounds for Lower (4th–6th grade) and Upper School (7th–8th grade) declared champions from each group, who then faced off in a final round to claim the title of 2025 SAA Geography Bee Champion.

Nicholas Pavelka (6th grade) was named Lower School champion, while Josh Carrillo (7th grade) triumphed in the Upper School and secured the title of overall champion by being the first to answer eight questions correctly. Both students were awarded ribbons in recognition of their accomplishments.

“It’s great to see the kids push themselves to achieve excellence,” said Mr. McDow. “They excelled not for accolades but to prove to themselves what they’re capable of achieving.”

Looking ahead, the top six students from each group will represent The Academy in the International Academic Competition’s San Antonio Regionals, hosted at SAA on March 22, 2025.

Qualifying Participants:
Lower School: Wes M., John K., Robert A., Matthew P., Nicholas P. (Lower School Champion), and Holden G.
Upper School: Ford A., Lucas R., Silas S., Edward G., Anish M., and Josh C. (Upper School and Overall Champion)

Special thanks go to Christopher McDow for leading the Bee and to faculty members Debbie Oblitas, Kayla Briseño, Veronica Bordano, and John Hernandez for helping to make it a success.
