San Antonio Academy welcomed hundreds of parents, grandparents, professionals, and interested community members into Ellison Hall Wednesday evening to hear from renowned author and psychologist Dr. Michael Gurian. In his presentation, "The Mind of Boys," Dr. Gurian focused on how to nurture boys' success in school and beyond. Drawing from more than three decades of research in brain science, education, and family dynamics, he provided a blend of humor, practical advice, and scientific rigor.
Attendees were treated to an engaging exploration of how boys' learning and social-emotional development differs from girls', underscored by cultural influences. Dr. Gurian's expertise as a marriage and family counselor added depth to his discussion as he delved into the challenges boys face in the modern digital age. By blending science with relatable anecdotes from everyday life, he not only shed light on boys' development but also offered valuable perspectives for raising daughters.
Dr. Gurian went on to provide practical strategies for supporting boys' growth and learning. He emphasized the importance of understanding the unique needs of boys and how institutions like SAA are leveraging brain science to create boy-friendly educational environments.
Since 2017, San Antonio Academy has been a Gurian Model School, meaning SAA has been trained and adheres to the educational concepts Michael Gurian has established for same-sex education.
Dr. Michael Gurian is a marriage and family counselor, and the author of 32 books, including Saving Our Sons, The Minds of Boys, and Boys and Girls Learn Differently. As a social philosopher, he has pioneered efforts to bring neurobiology and brain research into homes, schools, corporations, and public policy.
