New Battalion Leadership to be Inducted at Ceremony on October 21
Posted October 4, 2024
Following an extensive evaluation process that includes a comprehensive review of every 7th and 8th grade cadet, the San Antonio Academy Order of Merit Committee is preparing to announce the Battalion leadership positions for the 2024-25 school year. The new leaders will be formally inducted during a Battalion Leadership Ceremony held after chapel on Monday, October 21, where all 8th graders and a select number of 7th graders will assume their responsibilities.
Families of the inductees are encouraged to attend chapel and the ceremony, which will feature an Alumni Monday presentation from former Battalion Commander Billy C. ‘16. All former Academy Battalion Commanders have also been invited to attend the events.
SAA’s Military Leadership Program is designed to enhance the school’s challenging educational program with a focus on developing young leaders who are also committed to being scholars, young men of integrity, and brothers on whom others can rely. In addition, those leaders should be exemplars of our Academy motto: Be honest. Be kind. Be the best you can be.
Beginning in 7th grade and continuing through their 8th grade year, boys are considered for a range of leadership roles, including Commander, Executive Officer, Platoon Leader, Battalion Staff, First Sergeant, and Squad Leader. Responsibilities vary by rank, with the Battalion Commander overseeing all Battalion activities, while other positions focus on ensuring the smooth operation of each of the six companies.
Each fall, the Commandant assembles a committee to oversee the selection process for Battalion leadership positions. The committee evaluates each student's leadership potential based on teacher and peer rankings, inspections, school spirit, academic performance, conduct, and participation in activities both inside and outside of school. From these factors, the committee creates an Order of Merit List (OML) with recommendations for positions, which are then endorsed by the committee chair. The Head of School conducts the final review and approval.
These leadership roles are integral to the Academy experience, enhancing student life, complementing academics, and reinforcing the school's traditions and values. Cadets hold their ranks throughout the school year until commencement day, when leadership officially transitions to next year’s 8th grade class.
