Kempe Shelton - Class of 1994 (Alumni Monday Speaker)
It was a pleasure to have Academy alumnus and current parent Kempe Shelton '94 join us as our Alumni Monday speaker on October 28, 2024. During his speech, Kempe spoke to the boys about his time here at SAA, reflecting on the bonds created and the lessons instilled that would later help him during challenging times.
Kempe shared his journey from a rural upbringing outside Kerrville to The Academy, where his family sent him to enhance his education and expand his world. He spoke about life as a boarder and how it allowed him the opportunity to form lifelong friendships and bonds with his classmates and former teachers, Mr. James Berdecio and Mr. Barry Bradley.
His dedication to The Academy has extended to his family, with his "bonus" son, Charles Leighton, graduating in 2023 and his son, Luke, set to graduate this year.
He also shared about a life-changing stroke in Colorado that left him paralyzed. Facing immense challenges, he drew upon the Tex Hill quote to guide his recovery journey. With determination and faith, he rebuilt his life, embodying the message: “Work hard, stick to your values, and trust God.”
His words resonated deeply, encouraging students to embrace life’s challenges and rewards, work hard, and have fun along the way.
