Joseph Shields - Class of 2005 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

Joseph Shields - Class of 2005 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

On October 6, 2025, SAA alumnus and Board of Trustees chair Joseph Shields, class of 2005, returned to campus to speak with the boys on the theme of leadership as our Alumni Monday speaker before the new battalion leadership ceremony occurred. Reflecting on his own eighth-grade experience 20 years ago, Joe recalled the moment his name was called as the next battalion commander.

Alumni Monday - Joe Shields

Joe shared how leadership continues to shape his life, including his current role on the school’s Board of Trustees, which he described as “all about leadership” and protecting the school’s mission. He encouraged the boys, particularly eighth graders stepping into leadership positions, to embrace their roles and remember that younger classmates are looking up to them.

Using examples ranging from the wisdom shared by his grandfather, Red McCombs, to the leadership style of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, he emphasized key lessons:

  • Leaders don’t succeed alone; they rely on good advisors.

  • Great leaders foster communication and collaboration within their teams.

  • True leadership means holding high standards with kindness and humility.

  • Growth is a daily discipline; there is no “status quo.”

Quoting both Scripture and personal mentors, Joe underscored that leadership is challenging but deeply rewarding. “There is no greater joy,” he said, “than seeing those in your care get better.”

His parting challenge to the eighth graders was clear: lead with purpose, commit to constant growth, and set an example worth following.

SAA Boys Lend Helping Hands for Catholic Charities’ Project Turkey Box

In the spirit of service and gratitude, San Antonio Academy joined forces with Catholic Charities of San Antonio to support Project Turkey Box, a community initiative providing Thanksgiving meals to families in need. Over the course of three days, boys from every grade level worked to transform banana boxes into cheerful vessels for holiday dinners. Each box was wrapped, decorated, and included a handwritten Thanksgiving note. The small gesture will soon bring joy and nourishment to homes across San Antonio this holiday season. With Catholic Charities’ goal of preparing 500 boxes, Academy students made a significant contribution toward meeting that milestone. The project, held just a short walk from campus, offered boys a firsthand look at how small acts of service can make a big impact.
