Gurian Institute Re-Certifies San Antonio Academy as Gurian Model School

Gurian Institute Re-Certifies San Antonio Academy as Gurian Model School

Published April 2, 2024

The Gurian Institute recently announced San Antonio Academy's re-certification as a "Gurian Model School." This means that SAA has been trained and adheres to the educational concepts the institute's founder, Michael Gurian, has established for same-sex education. Gurian’s approach is based upon three foundational concepts: (1) boys and girls learn differently; (2) nurture the nature; and (3) understand, monitor, and guide cultural influences.

Re-certification comes following a visit in February from the institute's founder, Michael Gurian, who provided trainings and presentations for teachers, administrators, and parents. The announcement states how impressed Gurian was by the school's passionate educators and the unwavering support from parents and the community, leaving him with a profound appreciation for SAA's methodologies and pedagogical approach.

“We are excited to re-certify and thus continue our work with the Gurian Institute," said Director of School Support and Curriculum, Dr. Patrick Atkerson. "The pedagogical theory and strategies we’ve gained and implemented from GI over the last few years have led to affirmation of our structure as leading edge, and increased child, parent, and staff awareness of best teaching practices. GI provides a lens on boys’ development like no other institution I know of. I think of SAA as already a great school and GI makes us greater.”

The announcement shines a spotlight on The Academy and features insights from some of our dedicated faculty and staff, along with how they are applying the Gurian Institute's strategies.

“I use constant movement in my classroom by incorporating music, finger plays, dancing, and games,” said Primary School Spanish Teacher, Alexandra Johnson.

The endorsement further exemplifies The Academy's commitment to providing a nurturing environment that fosters an exceptional education intentionally crafted for boys.
