Educating Future Leaders: Mock Congress Passes Mental Health Bill

Educating Future Leaders: Mock Congress Passes Mental Health Bill

In a display of civic engagement, Mr. Barry Bradley's 8th-grade American History class transformed into legislators for a Mock Congress session.

A proposed bill from Rep. Bonilla’s committee, which includes Reps. Bailey and Espy, advocates for mandatory mental health evaluations for military personnel. Under their proposed legislation, servicemen and women would undergo assessments upon enlistment and subsequent evaluations upon returning from combat zones.

As part of the exercise, the students summoned an expert witness—San Antonio Academy's Director of Counseling and Wellness, Ernest Cox, PhD, NCC, CSC. Dr. Cox's expertise shed light on mental health considerations. Fielding their thoughtful questions, he helped the House to make an informed decision.

Two days following Dr. Cox's testimony, the House convened once more, passing the bill with a 7 to 2 majority. Next on the legislative agenda: the bill will proceed to the Senate.

In this engaging educational activity, students not only learned the intricacies of the legislative process but also demonstrated their commitment to addressing real-world issues with empathy.

Class of 2024

While it is bittersweet to see our Class of 2024 prepare to graduate, it is our hope that they remain in touch with us at The Academy as they continue their education. Our 8th grade Cadets have had a very busy spring, including the 8th grade class trip, the Shakespeare Play, Military Ball, Alumni/8th Grade Luncheon, 8th Grade Debate, and of course, Commencement with a luncheon to follow at Estancia del Norte. What an accomplishment these boys have achieved!

8th grade debate

Two teams of 8th graders challenged each other on the Ellison Hall stage to debate whether the United States should implement a universal basic income (UBI) in the annual 8th Grade Championship Debate. Held on Wednesday, May 15, this event underscores the emphasis The Academy places on developing public speaking skills, as students articulate their ideas confidently, think critically, and engage in formal discourse – all in front of a large audience of faculty, families, and peers.

2024 elementary spring concert

Last Friday, May 10, our Primary School and Elementary School boys, along with the Wildcats Chorale, Seeley Singers, and Pep Band, put on a fantastic spring concert. Academy families joined us in Ellison Hall for the presentation of "An Afternoon at the Movies" with music from famous movie musicals.
