SAA's Class of 2023 Present Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'

Published February 9, 2023

The San Antonio Academy class of 2023 took to the stage this week to perform for family, friends, faculty, staff, and underclassmen brothers in their rendition of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Each grade-level section gave an outstanding performance in their respective roles, captivating their audience through each scene with lots of applause and laughter to help along the way.

One of the many unique aspects of SAA is the annual 8th Grade Shakespeare Play. At San Antonio Academy, stage performance of Shakespeare's work is an integral component of the 8th-grade language arts curriculum. It provides an invaluable instructional tool for helping students to understand classic works through a combination of classroom study and a great deal of lively activity: a perfect educational approach for middle school boys.

This much-anticipated tradition has been directed by Mr. Brenden Moore, SAA's 8th Grade English & Literature Teacher, for more than 30 years. The boys spend five weeks preparing for the play during their language arts period, and it is often seen as one of the most memorable experiences from their final Academy year.

Bravo to the Class of 2023 for their incredible performances! Also, a huge round of applause for Mr. Moore and his dedication to these boys, as well as to all the 8th-grade parents who helped backstage with costumes, makeup, and a lot of support.
