Brandon Hamner - Class of 2004 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

Brandon Hamner - Class of 2004 (Alumni Monday Speaker)

It was a pleasure to have Academy alumnus Brandon Hamner '04 join us as our Alumni Monday speaker on December 2, 2024. During his speech, Brandon shared his journey and heartfelt reflections on the lasting impact of his time at SAA.

Brandon Hamner

Brandon, who was born with cerebral palsy, recounted how his older brother, Hudson '98, who sadly passed away in December of 2022, advocated for him to attend the school, demonstrating the foundational value of brotherhood that would come to define his experience. Despite his parents' initial concerns about his ability to keep up, Brandon found The Academy to be a place of inclusion, support, and personal growth.

He shared vivid memories of teachers and classmates who went out of their way to nurture and encourage him. From Pre-K teachers who taught him to read and write to coaches who encouraged him to play sports, taking the extra time to practice with him, Brandon painted a picture of a school community deeply invested in the success and well-being of all of its students.

He also reflected on The Academy's unique culture, marked by daily chapel, mentorship across age groups, and traditions that foster a sense of responsibility and camaraderie. He credited this environment with shaping his character and helping him develop a profound appreciation for the value of relying on and supporting others.

"Brotherhood," he said, "is what sets The Academy apart. It’s a culture that stays with you long after you leave, shaping the person you become and teaching you to look out for others while relying on them in return."

Concluding his speech, Brandon invited the boys to embrace the unique traditions and relationships that define their experience at SAA, reminding them that they are part of something rare and deeply meaningful.
