Bondurant Field House and Fine Arts Center Opens for Student Use
SAA's Bondurant Field House and Fine Arts Center opened for student and faculty use during Fall 2021. The new, modern facilities make it possible for SAA's athletics, art, and music programs to expand and reach a higher level of excellence.
Take a peek inside this beautiful new facility made possible by generous Academy supporters.
Previously termed the "Multipurpose Athletic & Art Center (MAAC)," the facility's construction began in June 2020, and took 14 months to complete. It replaced the Verna McLean Field House, which serves as The Academy's gymnasium for 72 years.
The athletic, art, and music programs are the heartbeat of our school. Recognizing these programs serve as the pulse of our curriculum, the facility is designed to be a hub where the boundless energy of a boy are channeled to activities that unlock aspects of his brain so he can reach his full potential.
"There is no finer an institution than San Antonio Academy to shape the total boy - rigorous academics, robust athletics, and the fine arts that inspire the soul. It is time for our facilities to meet the ideal," said Red McCombs, SAA Grandparent.
We are grateful that SAA has a long history of support from its community. Continuing that tradition, it's the Board's leadership in this effort that was notable with 100% participation - partnered with other generous donors - who came together to fund the construction and make this happen. Reaching this important goal of The Academy's 2015 Strategic Plan is a testament to the passion and dedication our donors have for the traditions and mission of San Antonio Academy. Thank you to everyone who helped us build a better boy by building a better school.
The art facilities encourage our students to explore the farthest reaches of their creativity, challenging them to go beyond the expected. Two new art classrooms (one for Primary School and one for Elementary and Middle School) provide increased usable space designed expressly for art with built-in functionality, natural daylight, improved acoustics, large open spaces, and ample storage.
The athletics facilities will be the center of our school spirit, providing our student athletes the opportunity to elevate their games and sportsmanship. The new McCombs Gymnasium features a regulation-sized court, updated bleachers, natural lighting, and controlled ventilations with updated lockers, showers, storage, expanded two-story equipment storage, and coaches offices.
The music facilities provide a state-of-the-art environment for our students to discover those talents that go way beyond the classroom. The new music room features an improved acoustical environment, includes a separate ensemble room, dedicated storage space for music equipment, and an integrated sound system.
