An Outstanding End to the Season for The SAA Wildcats Robotics Team
Posted March 25, 2024
San Antonio Academy's robotics team recently traveled to Iowa to showcase all their hard work and dedication at the highly competitive U.S. Open Robotics Competition held from March 18 to 20. The team is comprised of four SAA students: Merrit Nicewander (6th grade), Evan Reyes, Alex Leal, and Sammy Arla (all 5th grade). Despite facing challenging opponents from across the globe, the boys demonstrated exceptional skill and resilience throughout the entire event.
The competition proved to be a grueling test of skill and endurance, with the intensity of three regular tournaments condensed into a mere day and a half. Despite the challenge, they persevered through 21 rounds of matchplay with remarkable consistency, experiencing only one instance of robot malfunction.
Entering the finals round ranked 15th in their division of 25, the team fought their way up to securing an impressive 8th place position overall at the competition. Overall, the entire group ranked 21 out of the 53 teams that competed that day.
Throughout this robotics season, the group has collected numerous impressive awards at local tournaments, including the prestigious Teamwork Champions Award for their outstanding robot gameplay, the Design Award for their meticulously crafted Engineering Notebook, and the Excellence Award for their all-around exemplary performance.
Their exceptional performance also caught the judges' attention, inviting them for an in-person team interview based on their outstanding remote interview.
During deliberations, the judges further recognized the team's excellence by collecting their Engineering Notebook, noticing their documentation and innovative design processes.
The team's performance exemplifies their dedication, skill, and integrity in the face of stiff competition. Well done, gentlemen. We are so proud of all your accomplishments throughout the season.
