"American Gumbo:" A Mother's Day Concert

"American Gumbo:" A Mother's Day Concert

Posted May 15, 2023

Last Friday, May 12, our Primary and Elementary School boys, along with the Wildcats Chorale and Pep Band, put on a fantastic spring concert in honor of Mother's Day. Celebrating the music of America, Academy families joined us in Ellison Hall to hear musical performances from genres like Rock and Roll, Folk, Country, Jazz, and more!

The Primary School (Pre-K through 2nd grade) boys kicked things off with the cutest rendition of the American Folk song, "Bought Me a Cat," performed by Pre-K and Kindergarten. Then, the lights were dimmed, and battery-powered candles were lit as 1st graders performed the African-American Spiritual song, "Wade in the Water." 2nd grade was up next with their performance of the Jazz classic entitled "Blue Skies." The entire Primary group then joined together to sing, "You Are My Sunshine" with a solo by Kindergartener Pierce S. After the sweet rendition, the 1st and 2nd grade boys continued the sentiment with the Country song, "Humble and Kind" and a solo by 2nd grader Jude W. For the grand finale, a group of boys took center stage in sequined shirts and rock star sunglasses, with all Primary School boys joining in for the Rockabilly classic, "Blue Suede Shoes."

Elementary School (3rd - 5th grade) students were joined by the Wildcats Pep Band and Wildcats Chorale to bring our SAA families a spectacular performance. Songs included classics like "How Can I Keep from Singing, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "La Bamba," "Johnny B. Goode," and "In God's Hands." They even gave their audience a surprise encore of "Lean on Me," a song perfectly describing the Bond of Brothers and what it means to be an Academy Boy.

Overall it was a fantastic afternoon of performances, and we were so happy to welcome everyone who attended. Well done, gentlemen!

And a very big thank you to our music directors, Dr. Owen Duggan and Mrs.Traci Navas, for putting together a wonderful concert for all of our Academy mothers and families.
