2024-25 Battalion Leadership Ceremony
Posted October 21, 2024
After an extensive evaluation process that includes a holistic review of each 7th and 8th grade cadet, the San Antonio Academy Order of Merit Committee announced the Battalion leadership positions for the 2024-25 school year on Monday, October 21. The ceremony included the induction of all 8th grade students and 12 7th graders into their new ranks.
Starting in the 7th grade and into their 8th-grade year, boys are considered for positions that include Commanders, Executive Officers, Platoon Leaders, Battalion Staff, First Sergeants, Squad Leaders, and Guideon Bearers. Duties vary by position but range from being responsible for all Battalion activities in the highest-ranking position of Battalion Commander to positions throughout each of the six companies.
Every fall, the Commandant forms a committee to undertake the selection process. This committee assesses each student’s leadership potential based on teacher and peer rankings, inspections, school spirit, academic performance, conduct, and participation in activities both within and outside of school. Using these criteria, an Order of Merit List (OML) is developed, containing position recommendations that are then endorsed by the committee chair. The final review and approval are given by the Head of School.
The selected boys hold their ranks throughout the academic year, leading up to the culmination of their leadership development and educational journey on commencement day. Playing a vital part in providing an exceptional experience intentionally crafted for boys, these roles enrich student life, complement academics, and uphold the school's traditions and values. Once 8th grade cadets have formally been relieved of duty on the day of commencement, leadership officially transitions to the 7th graders.
Six former Battalion Commanders were also in attendance, offering encouragement and inspiration to the newly inducted 7th- and 8th-grade leaders. Included were Lee Brockwell '23, brother of newly appointed Battalion Commander William Brockwell '25; brothers Robert '24 and Billy Conn '16 (Alumni Monday speaker); Lincoln O'Brien '04; Don Noble '71; and Matthew Silva '02.
Congratulations to all the cadets selected for 2024-25 leadership positions. View the assigned positions.
