2023 8th Grade Debate

Posted May 18, 2023

San Antonio Academy's 8th Grade Debate made its return to Ellison Hall on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, as two teams of five went head-to-head in formal discourse in hopes of being named champion.

The topic up for debate was whether or not artificial intelligence (or A.I.) poses a serious threat to the future of our modern world. The proposing team started the discussion off strong as Antonio S. took the podium to argue his points on why he and his team believe that A.I. is a threat on the rise. His opponent, Judah B., then took the podium and rebutted with his team's view as to why A.I. poses no threat and is actually a tool to enhance everyday lives and the future.

One by one, each 8th-grade boy gave their counterarguments to try and disprove their opponents. The boys worked together and put their research and knowledge to use to successfully persuade the judges and their audience with the best argument and supporting facts to back it up.

Although each team gave very compelling reasons, only one team would be named the 8th-grade debate champions. Coming down to a mere 4-point difference, the proposing team would be named the winner of the debate.

Thank you to the 8th Grade English & Literature Teacher, Mr. Brendan Moore for giving our boys this opportunity to display their growth in becoming great public speakers, as well as to our judges, Ms. Briseno, Ms. J. Garcia, and Mr. Bradley. Of course, thank you to all the parents and families who came out to support the boys in one of their final public displays of understanding as an Academy Boy.

Proposing Team: Antonio S., Nathan W., Wilson L., Finn T.

Opposing Team: Daniel N., Lee B., Judah B., Cuatro H.

Congratulations, SAA Class of 2023!

While it is bittersweet to see our Class of 2023 prepare to graduate, it is our hope that they remain in touch with us at The Academy as they continue their education. Our 8th grade Cadets have had a very busy spring, including the 8th grade class trip, the Shakespeare play, Military Ball, Alumni/8th Grade Luncheon and of course, Commencement with a luncheon to follow at the San Antonio Country Club. What an accomplishment these boys have achieved!
