1st Graders Race for the Yellow Jersey in the 35th Annual Tour de L’Academy Bike Race
Posted October 28, 2024
A cherished San Antonio Academy tradition unfolded on Friday, October 25, as 1st graders gathered for the 35th Annual “Tour de L’Academy” Bike Race. Under a clear, sunlit sky, 36 eager young riders arrived at Basse Field, warmly welcomed by their 7th-grade buddies for an afternoon filled with pedal-powered action, friendly competition, and Academy brotherhood.
Each racer, outfitted with helmets and bikes—some steady on two wheels, others balanced on four—lined up for the series of heats with their 7th-grade buddies by their sides. Once a race started, these older buddies ran alongside the young riders, providing encouragement and guidance through the rounds, with the top two racers from each heat advancing to the semifinals.
Parents, teachers, and Academy staff cheered from the sidelines as riders took off with solid starts and pushed through exciting finishes. Eventually, four finalists faced off in the finale. When the dust settled, Gage S. crossed the final line in first place, earning the title of 35th Annual Tour de L’Academy Champion. The moment was made extra special by having both his buddy Wyatt and 7th-grade brother Foster there to congratulate him as well.
The “Tour de L’Academy,” modeled after the legendary Tour de France, has remained one of San Antonio Academy’s most beloved rites of passage since its inception in 1989. Many young Academy boys dream of capturing the coveted yellow jersey. But for those on the field, it’s not just about victory. The event emphasizes sportsmanship and brotherhood, with boys learning to support one another through the wins, the losses, and every turn in between.
