Leadership Opportunities Begin Here

We mark the 100th year of San Antonio Academy’s Military Program during the 2019-2020 school year. For a century, the Military Program has provided Academy boys an outlet for leadership opportunities. The program’s goals, developmentally appropriate for 3rd through 8th grade, are based on our school’s traditions and Social Emotional Learning (SEL)* competencies. While SEL may be an unfamiliar term to those who are not in the education field, the concept is a practice we’ve incorporated for decades. It is a method to help develop boys who are capable of critical thinking, making sound analysis, possessing uncompromising character, and are able to meet challenging demands.

SAA’s Military Program is focused on three key pillars to meet these goals:

Leadership Development
Uniform Standards
Company Spirit.

The latter goal, Company Spirit, is to instill a sense of esprit de corps and team work by using various competitive modes to achieve this. The Company Challenge was created this year to fulfill one of these modes. Partnering with the Physical Education Department, each Company goes head-to-head in events that stresses leadership, followership, and physical development. Three times a year this is played out on Frost Field. Challenges like the “Water Bucket Relay,” “Tug of War,” and “Baton Relay” are designed to test the capabilities of both leadership and followership, while exercising key SEL concepts.
