About Us

Established in 1886, San Antonio Academy is a non-profit, non-denominational, tax-exempt school for boys in prekindergarten through grade eight. We admit students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin. The Academy is one of only 16 all-boys independent elementary schools in the nation, and the only one of its kind in Texas!

Academy Historical Timeline 


1886 – Dr. W.B. Seeley founded The Seeley School.  Opening classes brought thirty boys to 231 East Houston Street, near the corner of Navarro, and by year’s end enrollment increased to sixty-four students.

1894 – Seeley School changes its name to San Antonio Academy.

1906 – Dr. W.W. Bondurant purchases San Antonio Academy and expands lower school program to include grades two through seven

1927 – Lieutenant W.T. Bondurant named headmaster of SAA and holds title until 1943 when, as Col. Bondurant, he is appointed President of SAA and TMI.

1952 – San Antonio Academy and TMI separate and SAA operates for the first time as an independent junior school.

1960 – SAA becomes 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.

1968 – SAA moves to 117 East French Place.

1985 – Board of Trustees recruits John Webster as Headmaster to establish a new vision for the school.

1994-1995 – SAA raises $2,500,000 during The Academy 2000 Capital Campaign to construct an assembly hall, an outdoor recreational plaza and a new athletic field.

1997 – Board votes to phase out boarding by June 1999.

1998-2000 – SAA raises $3,900,000 as part of the Imagine 2001 campaign to renovate the former dormitories into a 4,000 square foot library, eight new classrooms and spacious science and computer labs.
