Did you know that there are 11.6 million people in the US who are currently bilingual? And according to US Census Office, our nation will have an estimated 138 million Spanish speakers by 2050 — which would make it the biggest Spanish-speaking nation on Earth! These statics underscore why it is so important that our Academy boys are not only learning the language, but are excelling at it.
Academy boys took the annual National Spanish Exam recently, and the results are impressive.
With a total of 11 GOLD, 16 SILVER and 9 BRONZE medals along with 20 Honorable Mentions, over 80% of SAA 7th and 8th graders finished in the top half of the nation, and 16% of our students earned recognition for earning a spot in the top 5% of the nation! “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 150,000 students participating in 2018.”
San Antonio Academy has a long history of high achievement on these exams. Thank you to our Spanish teachers, Iliana Hieger (Dept. Chair), Natalie Bock and Claudia Davis for your exceptional instruction. The National Spanish Exam is taken by over 160,000 students in grades 6-12, administered by over 4,000 teachers at different levels across the United States. The National Spanish Examinations are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
