Dear Family and Friends of San Antonio Academy,
I have come to admire the incredible man we all know and love as our Head of School, friend, mentor, and tireless teacher. John Webster has provided remarkable leadership and vision to this beloved 130-year-old institution and has been steadfast in his dedication to leading our faculty and staff to create a family environment where children love school and love to learn.
John will step down at the end of the 2016-2017 school year to spend more time with his wife Marilyn and their children and grandchildren. Marilyn has given unconditional support and encouragement for John’s work at San Antonio Academy and we are indebted to her.
In 2008, aware of the impact of John’s leadership, the Board of Trustees addressed school succession by mandating that we be prepared for this day. We have taken this obligation seriously and have been diligent. The Board has engaged a nationally-recognized firm, Wickenden Associates, to lead the search for our next Head of School. Founder James Wickenden, a former Princeton University Dean of Admission, will lead this process.
The Board of Trustees will seek the input of families, faculty and staff, alumni, grandparents, the Advisory Council and John Webster. A search committee, made up of previous board chairs and a former trustee who hired John in 1985 and has mentored him since, will work with Wickenden and make the final recommendation to the Board. Our next Head of School will be guided by our code: “Be honest. Be kind. Be the best you can be.”
John invested 31 years building on the great work of Col. Bondurant to bring the school to a level of unprecedented excellence. Although John will step down as our Head of School, we fully expect him to be involved with the Academy for years to come.
The Board looks forward to a thorough vetting process and, with your help, will find a Head of School who will advance John’s great work and will carry the vision of San Antonio Academy to new heights.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Father of Niko, Class of 2018 and Christian, Class of 2022
